Veganism is a growing trend in the United States, although vegans and vegetarians are still in the minority by a wide margin. That being said, a lot of people are going vegan and staying vegan, so maybe vegans won’t be in the minority forever. Already, about 1% of the world’s population is vegan, and that accounts for quite an impact.

If you’re among those who are vegan or are thinking of going vegan, there are some things to know to help you succeed. Here are a few tips for going vegan and staying vegan

1. Know Your “Why”

Everyone has a different reason for wanting to become vegan. Are you upset by how animals are treated or concerned about the environment? Health conditions such as certain cancer, diabetes, and heart conditions are also a big reason people go vegan.

Whether you’re in it for the animals, the environment, or your health, knowing your “why” is going to be the driving factor in your success.

When you’re having a hard time, think of the reason you decided to become vegan and ask yourself these questions. If you gave up and ate something nonvegan, how would it affect your “why”? How would you feel? Is eating something nonvegan worth the price of your “why”?

Once you know your “why” learning more about it will solidify your choice and make living with your new lifestyle easier.

2. Learn What You Can

One of the best tips for going vegan is to do your research. Learning more about how and why to go vegan can help you succeed. Documentaries such as The Game Changers, Cowspiracy, What the Health, Earthlings, and more can help you learn why veganism is so important. There are many vegan documentaries on Netflix, Amazon, and online. Pick some that best suits your “why”, grab some vegan popcorn, and binge a few!

You’ll also want to learn what kind of nutrition your body needs and where you can find it.

If you’re the social type, you’ll want to learn how to maintain your lifestyle and balance it with your social life. This will involve finding ways to eat vegan at restaurants.

3. Meet Other Vegans

Humans are social creatures. We’ve evolved to cooperate with each other and make decisions based on the combined opinions of those around us.

A famous study by a psychologist named Stanley Milgram measured how likely we are to obey orders. The study found that we’re more likely to follow any instructions if ordered to by somebody we trust.

One variation of the study included another participant objecting, which caused the number of participants who refused to follow orders to drop significantly.

Finding your community can have great results if your group members are supportive. It can make us calmer, more confident, and keep us healthy. Plus, it feels less awkward when you’re not the only one asking about vegan options.

Search Facebook for “vegan + (name of your city or larger nearby city)”. Finding other vegans in your area is a great way to make new friends who share your same beliefs.
